Francois, L.A. Pioche, of San Francisco, was the man for whom Pioche was named. A pancker ledge was discovered in 1864 by William Hamblin on Ely Mountain, which led to the settling of Pioche. The town was founded in 1869 and laid out by P. McCannon, L. Lacour and A.M. Bush. Pioche made Tombstone seem pale by comparison in its wild days of the late 1800's
