Jim Butler, a prospector, found silver in 1900, starting the silver boom and the town of Tonopah. Tonopah is taken from the Shoshone word for "Water Brush referring to the spring which was at this location."

During late 1980's to 1992, the Tonopah Test Range (TTR) was the test sight and development sight for the F-117 Stealth Fighter that flew over Iraq during the Persian Gulf War.
