A history page for Wendover, Nevada

This area was settled in the 1920's when a gas station was built next to the road by Bill Smith. Though it wasn't officially incorporated until 1991, the area grew during the 1940's. The official name for Wendover is West Wendover, but it is often known simply as Wendover, Nevada.

The Army Air Corps built a bomber training base here during World War II. Some of the base has been converted to civilian use, but most of it has just deteriorated over the years. Some of the crews involved in the dropping of the Atomic bombs in Japan were trained here.

The Bonneville Salt Flats
This area lies on about 30,000 acres of public land. The salt flats were named for a Captain L. E. Bonneville, an officer and explorer. The Salt Flats are what is left of a huge prehistoric lake which was once 145 miles wide and 346 miles long. It went as deep as 1,050 feet. Some of the ancient shore line is still visable above the salt in the mountain areas. The famous Bonneville Speedway is about 4 miles east of Wendover on the border between Utah and Nevada.

Pilot Peak
A landmark used by many pioneer travelers as they journeyed to Oregon and California.
