Though Bloomfield is a fairly new village, having been incorporated on 1 June 1990, the area was settled and established in 1789 as East Bloomfield. The Township of East Bloomfield was established in 1833. East Bloomfield and Holcomb were both villages here since 1917. Years ago it used to be known as Bloomfield Station. There was a split in the town fathers because of the location of the then existent post office and it split into Holcomb and East Bloomfield. They had two independent governments and post offices. They consolidated as Bloomfield in 1990. Bloomfield has many charming old buildings and churches with stately ancient trees as well as a village green. Many of the old homes date back to the late 1700's.
The first Northern Spy apple seeds in the United States were planted here around 1800.
