History & History Related Items Copiague history: Copiague is from an Indian term meaning place of shelter. When Chief Wyandanch sold land in 1693, the first settlers named the area South Huntington. As time went on, the name was changed a number of times. Some of those names were Huntington South, Great Neck and Amityvill South. It was renamed again around 1900 as Marconiville in honor of Guglielmo Marconi, the wireless telegraph inventor. He was a friend of John Campagnoli, who bought the land the named the area for his friend. Marconi spend numerous summers in Copiague.
