History & History Related Items Hammondsport history: A Mr. Hammond had the community surveyed and laid out in 1827 and he named it Hammond's Port. The community is also known as the Cradle of Aviation because of Glenn Curtiss who built a kitelike plane called the June-Bug and flew it on 4 July 1908.
