Fire Island, on which Ocean Beach is located, was home to Native Americans who lived and hunted there. A development by John Wilbur in 1908 was the start of this village. By 1921, Beach Estates and Ocean Beach merged to make the new Ocean Beach. Soon it was incorporated as the Village of Ocean Beach. In the past, many people had summer homes here. Though there was a devastating hurricane in this area in 1938, it kindly spared most of Ocean Beach, leaving many of the old, historic homes intact.

Ocean Beach is often referred to as OB by those who live here. There are many visitors and summer residents so the local law enforcement is quite strict to maintain order. In fact, Ocean Beach, in its not too distant past, was known as the land of "NO" because of its many regulations and rules. Now, the area is much more relaxed and fun!
