Some information about the name of this community: From "L.I. Our Story"
"Indian Names Were His Fame", an article written about the author, William Wallace Tooker". The authors of this article quote from Tooker's writings from a paragraph on Ronkonkoma. In it he writes:
"This word first appears in a deed from 1664, reading "Bounds which they had formerly made into Raconkumake, a fresh pond about the middle of Long Island." Variations in other deeds include Raconkamuck, Raconckamich, and Ronconhama." It seems Tooker was interested in the Indian language and words. This was an Algonquin word meaning loosely translated: the lake or by the lake.
