Growing up in Roslyn
I grew up in Roslyn Heights and Roslyn Estates, attending first the Heights School and then graduating from Roslyn High in 1946. My dad, August Viemeister, (1893-1995) designed 28 homes in the area. We were family friends of the Christopher Morley family. As a boy, I prowled through the Ryan estate and the Mackay estate, paid 12 cents to see the movies, was a messenger in Civil Defense in WW2, and put pennies on the RR tracks for the steam engines to squash. Much of the life and times of the area (1930s, 1940's ) is described in "Start All Over- and American Experience", published by Hamilton's of Bedford, Virginia. This book is filled with photos and is described at
