The first settlers of the area were actually Native Americans. Wegwagonock was the Algonquian name for the village near what is now Sag Harbor. The early white settlers were both English and Dutch, mostly moving here from the villages of Southampton and East Hampton. The area became a well-used port for shipping out the farm produce grown in the neighboring areas.
