History & History Related Items Schenectady history: The nickname, the Electric City, came about when the city was the headquarters of General Electric in the early 1900's. There were at least 40,000 employees at one time. Though the numbers are down, most locals still refer to the area as the Electric City. Until the late 1950's or early 60's Schenectady was known as "The city that lights and hauls the world" because it had the largest GE plant in the world as well as the largest American Locomotive plant (ALCO).
