A history page for Schenevus.
Schenevus was first known as Jacksonboro when it was settled in 1793. It was the only incorporated village in the town of Maryland when it was incorporated on 6 June 1870. The name of Schenevus was given in 1848 when the second post office was opened. By 1864, the town had a population of approximately 200 residents.
Chief Schenevus and his beautiful daughter, Manaho, are an important part of the town's legendary heritage. The legend tells of the beloved only daughter of Chief Schenevus, Manaho. Though she was pursued by many warriors, she loved only one, Manatee, the son of Wameto. Read about this legend on the webpage
