Whitehall, New York is known as the BIRTHPLACE OF THE AMERICAN NAVY due to the fact that Benedict Arnold built a fleet in Whitehall Harbor for the Battle of Valcour Island. At the time Whitehall was known as Skenesborough in respect to Philip Skene, the founder, in 1759.
