New York State has a State Muffin - the Apple Muffin! It was created through the efforts of the children at Bear Road Elementary School in North Syracuse. They asked the Governor to sign a bill designating the muffin as the official state muffin.
The first railroad in America ran between Albany and Schenectady, a distance of 11 miles.
Uncle Sam
The famous symbol of "Uncle Sam" came from New York. He was a meatpacker from Troy, New York. When he stamped his meat "U.S. Beef" during the War of 1812, the soldiers thought it meant Uncle Sam. Later, his caricature became a symbol for our country. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Troy, New York

Geography:
An area in Madison County, about 12 miles south of Oneida and 26 miles southwest of Utica, has the distinction of being the exact geographic center of the state.
Four mountain ranges are found in New York - the Adirondack, the Catskill,
the Shawangunk and the Taconic.
Highest Mountain: Mount Marcy at 5,344 feet above sea level, located in Essex
County in the Adirondacks.
New York has 6,713 natural ponds, lakes and reservoirs of one acre or more. The largest lake entirely within the state is Oneida Lake. Other major lakes are the Finger Lakes. Lake George, Lake Placid, Otsego Lake and Lake Champlain (107 miles long!). The highest lake in the state is Lake Tear of the Clouds in Essex County at 4,320 above sea level. It is also considered to be the source of the Hudson River. There are 10 natural fresh-water lakes over 10 square miles. Lake Champlain covers 490 square miles and has islands that encompass about 55 square miles of land. The Great Lakes, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, are partly in New York. The surface area for the US portion of Lake Erie is 5,002 square miles. The area for Lake Ontario is 3,033 square miles.
There are 70,000 miles of river in New York! The Hudson River is 306 miles
long with its source in Essex County. The New York State Barge Canal System
has 800 miles of waterways making it the longest internal waterway system in
the USA. The Niagara River sends 40 million gallons of water over Niagara Falls
each minute.

History
The first constitution of New York was accepted on 20 April 1777, twelve years before the US Constitution was adopted. New York was also the site of the nation's first capital. The first president, George Washington, was inaugurated in New York on 30 April 1789.
