Like many Ohio communities, Bridgeport is the home of some renowned athletes. Baseball Hall of Famer, Phil Niekro, is probably at the top of this list. His brother, Joe Niekro, also had a fine major league baseball career. John Havlicek, who played at Ohio State and with the Boston Celtics, is one of the greatest basketball players of all time. Bill Jobko played football at Ohio State and later in the National Football League. Bobby Douglas has earned distinction both as a world-class amateur wrestler and coach. At Arizona State, his team won an NCAA Division I championship. He is currently (1999) the head coach at Iowa State.

Bridgeport is part of the Wheeling, West Virginia Metropolitan area.
