History & History Related Items

Before 1922, Cairo was named West Cairo. It had the distinction of being along the route of the Lincoln Highway, the first major coast to coast highway in the country, which was named for Abraham Lincoln. The highway was later designated as US Highway 30 and expanded to four lanes in this area. At that time, the highway was re-routed about a half mile south of town. Though the actual US 30 highway was moved, the Lincoln Highway remains running through Cairo.
