Chippewa Lake began as a summer resort in 1875. The neighboring villages of Chippewa-on-the-Lake and Briarwood Beach merged in 1998 to form Chippewa Lake. Though the two villages were merged in 1998, the total combined population is still about the same as it was thirty years ago.
The Indian word, Chippewa, means "the people who wear moccasins with puckered seams." The Chippewa, Lenape, Shawnee and Wyandot Indians all lived and hunted in this area until after the War of 1812 when the white hunters and trappers came.
