History & History Related Items Germantown history: Germantown was founded in 1803 by Philip Gunckel, who was originally from Pennsylvania. Germantown is known for its historic downtown area and the unique wagon-wheel design of its alley system, which was originally laid out by Gunckel when he settled in Germantown. The downtown area was added to the National Historic Register in 1976. Germantown attractions: The Pretzel Festival, held every year in Veteran's Memorial Park, is a tribute to the German heritage of the first settlers in the area. The 2nd oldest Inn in Ohio (The Florentine), is located in Germantown. Also, the covered bridge on Center Street is the only kind of bow-string bridge in existence in the world.
