Harrisburg, Ohio Historical Events

1930's (approximately)
A Story about Harrisburg
When I was a little boy, and lived on Maple Street in the 1950's, my mother and I would go across the street to Si Bolin's house and talk to him. He was very elderly then, but still bright and articulate. One time I remember him telling a very vivid story, and there was an odd twinkle in his eye when he told it. I don't have the slightest idea whether it is true or not.
It seems in the first half of the 1900's the Three-C Highway ran through the middle of the town. Columbus Street was a fairly raucous street and had eight bars with trucks and people moving through the town day and night. There were eight taverns as he told it, and the trouble they caused was considerable. The town wanted it cleaned up. Seems one Saturday night all eight taverns caught fire, and the volunteer fire department didn't respond! Next day the city council met and voted the town dry! It remained so for the next forty years!
