Jewett was originally known as Fairview. It was established on 5 December 1851 by John Stahl. In 1852 Stahl platted the town with the name as Fairview with 51 lots initially. The village of Jewett was incorporated in 1885. In 1881 a number of residents wanted to change the name. They offered three reasons for the change which were accepted. First that the post office name was already Jewett. Second, there was already another Fairview in Guernsey County and third, there was no other Jewett in the state. The municipal government began in 1886. At one time the main line for the Pennsylvania and Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroads went through Jewett. This encouraged building and employment for a time.
