1896
The Granite Revolving Ball
The local Merchant family commissioned a monument for their family plot in the Marion Cemetery in 1896. This was no ordinary ball. It was a 5200 pound polished granite ball on a pedestal. In about two years time, someone noticed that the heavy ball had begun to rotate. They saw an unpolished spot that had before been on the bottom of the ball and out of sight. The family called in the original crew to check out the ball and re-set it, which they did. Before long, the ball had mysteriously moved once again. Since that time, there is no explanation of why the ball is moving or what is happening. The ball was featured in Ripley's Believe it or Not in 1929. Others from around the world came to see the ball in motion. re-set the ball. It was not long before the ball again began its now continuous movement. To this day, the Granite ball remains a mystery.
