Martins Ferry is the birthplace of novelist and essayist, William Dean Howells (1837-1920), Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, James Wright (1927-1980), and football legend Lou Groze (1924). Each April, the library hosts an annual poetry festival in honor of Wright.
