History & History Related Items Port Clinton history: Ezekiel Smith Haines bought acreage here in 1827 and named the town Port Clinton when it was platted in 1828. It is thought he named it for DeWitt Clinton who was known as the "Father of the Erie Canal." Mr Clinton died a few months before the platting of the town. Port Clinton attractions: Ottawa-Erie County Regional Airport Because of the large Walleye catch on Lake Erie, Each year Port Clinton holds the Walleye Fest. On each New Year's eve, there is a Walleye drop to bring in the new year. Walley Walleye, a 20 foot Walleye replica, comes down the pole in the town square every new year with people coming from all over to watch regardless of the cold weather. Area restaurants offer walleye specialties, including walleye chowder and walleye bagels. There are over 16,000 docks in Port Clinton. Fishing is popular year round here, even in the dead of winter when ice-fishermen come out to fish. Return to Index
