History & History Related Items Ripley history: The founder of Ripley was Colonel James Poage. He was the grandson of Robert Poage who immigrated to America in 1734 from Ireland. He served in the army and they were paid by being given land. He chose the land where Ripley now stands. There is a plaque to James Poage near the Ohio River in Ripley.
