Sandusky is the county seat for Erie County.
G.G.Grandfather, Michael Herb, a Civil War Vet. that lived at 121 John St. was married in Sandusky, Ohio Feb.20th, 1854, at St.Peter & Pauls church. Michael and his bride were married by Father Buff, thanks to the information in a letter written by Father Wm F. Murphy, April 7th 1904. G.G.Grandmother was the daughter of G.G.G.Grandfather Geo. Schumacker, Sr. of Sandusky, Ohio. They moved to Wisconson where their first 3 children were born: Julia 7/10/1855, Kathrin 4/25/1857, and my G.Grandmother, Mary(Schoder)1/29/1859.
They went to Philadelphia Pa. where
G.G.Grandfather enlisted into the 5th Pa cav. 65th vol company L., better
known as Kautz's Cavalry, which played a big part at the Siege of Petersburg
and the Richmond campaign. He was at Appomattox when Lee surrendered to
Grant. After he enlisted, the rest of the family returned to Sandusky, Ohio. His youngest son, Michael R. Herb, was a co-owner of the, one-time, largest department store in Sandusky, Ohio, The Herb And Myers Store. This was the first Department store in the city of Sandusky. He went into the venture with
a friend by the name of Frank H. Myers. The store was called Herb & Myers. It became automated with the first elevator that was introduced to the city. It had a belt driven cup the customer would put the price sticker in and the money, it would go up to a second level where the change was made and then returned to the customer with a thank you note. After many years Myers broke off with Herb. After that time Herb continued with the business with himself being the sole owner.
