East Duke is the official name of the town in Southwestern Oklahoma that goes by Duke. At one time, there were two towns, East Duke and West Duke. There was a long-standing feud between the two communities. In the early part of the 1900's, they had a ceremony were they literally buried a hatchet in the main cross town of "East" Duke. West Duke no longer exists and the "East" is generally dropped from the town name.
Duke is also home to one of the first 'underground' schools in the nation. Built in the 1960's, all the classrooms and the cafetorium (combo cafeteria and auditorium) were built underground. The gymnasium and a paved outdoor basketball court are above the class rooms. Nobody ever had to worry about tornadoes at school in Duke.
