History & History-related items
In 1901 the town of Elmer was founded by Mr. W. T. Thaggard and Mr. J. H. Barr. The town was named for Elmer W. Slocum, an official of the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railroad. About 1908 this railway extended it's tracks south from Altus through Elmer and into Texas. Because trade was diverted, and the stage line and cattle trails had long since been abandoned the Yeldell trading post building was moved to Elmer and the other Yeldell buildings were torn down or moved.
