They spent the entire day riding along the fence rows and among the trees lining the banks of Jack Creek, Brush Creek, and Deep Red. They shot numerous squirrels and rabbit. Also, with the help of the dogs, they dug two skunks and three possums out of their dens. It was a magnificent, never to be forgotten, day for these two 14 year old boys!
However, they had to pay for their fun. The next day, the school Superintendent (after a phone call to their parents) gave them a very vigorous paddling; 10 hard hits on the butt with a large wooden paddle. All indications are that they learned their lesson. Don Duggins eventually became County Superintendent of Schools of Comanche County, Oklahoma. David Nixon became an Okie at Large and traveled about the world doing technical work related to space-age communications.
This is a true story. It was talked about for several weeks in the school and in the little town
