1935, August 15
Death date of Aviator, Wiley Post
Aviator Wiley Post grew up in Maysville, OK. He helped in the construction of an airport at Fort Sill, Oklahoma which may be where his love of flying began. Wiley's 1926 flying license was signed by Orville Wright.
On August 15, 1935, Wiley accompanied by Oklahoman Will Rogers, took off from Point Barrow, Alaska, and crashed minutes later, killing both men. The main airport in Oklahoma is named after Rogers "Will Rogers World Airport" while a smaller airport on the north side of Oklahoma City is named Wiley Post Airport. Wiley Post is buried at the Memorial Park Cemetery in north Oklahoma City on Memorial Road.
Maysville has honored Post by renaming the high school auditorium The Wiley Post Auditorium, as well as The Wiley Post Lake, and The Wiley Post Monument dedicated in his memory at the Kiwanis Walking Trail.
