Sterling history:

First known as Hamlin, Sterling began in what is now the east portion of the present day Sterling. Another group of residents planned a town just west of Hamlin and named it Sterling. The post office was established there on 17 October 1901.

The town was named Sterling for Captain Charles Sterling, a Texas Ranger, who was one of the cattle ranchers in the area. Judge Warren Brown appointed two men as commissioners for a new town of Sterling in 1902. It was located in Section 8 and had 320 acres.
