History & History Related Items Taft history: Taft was first known as Twine, in the Indian Territory. It was established in 1903 and was a center for rural farmers to sell their goods. Many Creek Freedmen lived in or near Taft. The Creek Freedmen Shrine and African American landmark, built by Napoleon Davis, is located in Taft, a memorial to the history of the 5000 Africans who lived in the Creek Nation.
