The Sucker Day Festival is a celebration of laughing at ourselves for having been suckered by a circus flimflam man in the early 1950s. He came to town selling advanced tickets, advertising, etc. for a circus. The business people stocked up on hotdogs, soda pop, hamburgers and hay for the elephants. No circus appeared. The money was gone. Rather than let the food go to waist, a free celebration was held, with the community invited to polk fun at the business leaders for having been suckered. This has become an annual celebration, with arts and crafts, antiques, tractors, high school bands, food booths, rodeo, gospil singing, a street dance and parade. Come help us celebrate.
Sucker Day is celebrated the last Saturday of August. Contact the Wetumka Chamber of Commerce for information.
