The name, Clatskanie, came from the Tlatskanai tribe of Native Americans who lived in the upper Nehalem Valley south of the Clatskanie River.

The area was settled around 1852 when several men traveled down the Columbia River to make new homes. The area had thick forest, but also had a small grassland area. It was here that E.G. Bryant and his wife settled in and named their new "town" Bryantville. It became part of Clatskanie in 1854.
