Climate
mild and humid due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Also, there is rain often induced by the coast mountain ranges. Snow may occasionally fall, but it is a rare event.

An early explorer, Sir Francis Drake, is said to have sought shelter in the bay for the Golden Hind and its crew.
Founded in the 1850s, Coos Bay was first known as Marshfield after the hometown of the founder, J.C. Tolman. It was incorporated in 1874 as Marshfield. The name was officially changed to Coos Bay in 1944.
The word, Coos, is of from of the Native American groups on the nation's east coast and means lake and place of the pines.

Attractions
Cape Arago Lighthouse
First built in 1866 because of the large shipping traffic in the area, it was replaced in 1909. Finally in 1934, an 40 foot concrete tower was built on the site. The light was updated in 1993 by the US Coast Guard. Though not available to the public, it may be viewed in the Sunset Bay State Park nearby.
Coos Art Museum
The museum's exhibits are rotated throughout the year though most items are available to view on the website.
