Garibaldi was named by its first postmaster, Daniel B. Bayley, to honor Giuseppi Garibaldi in 1879. The Tillamook Indians had used the area for hundreds of years as a fishing village. Many famous explorers charted its harbor in their travels. It wasn't long before settlers arrived and the area became a busy fishing port.
