Gold Beach is located at the mouth of the Rogue River and is the county seat of Curry county. It has grown slowly since becoming the county seat in 1859. Access to the city was limited in its very early days. The first wagon train was built in 1890, connecting regions to the north and south. Highway 101 wasn't completed until 1922, with the opening of the Rogue River bridge. The city was the last to incorporate in Oregon, incorporating in 1945. The timber industry supplies a large number of jobs in the area. The Siskiyou National Forest supplies much of the timber for the local sawmills. Many recreational opportunities are also available within the National Forest. The recreational fishing on the Rogue River has been popular with locals for years. The tremendous salmon and steelhead fishing is known world-wide. (Submitted by Adam Ziegler, High Desert Middle School)Here is a history page for Gold Beach.
