Jordan Valley was settled by Basque sheepherders who grazed their sheep in the sagebrush of the Owyhee Desert. After coming to the area in the 1890ís and establishing their sheep and cattle, the area continued to rely on this resource as a major part of their economy. Mining in the nearby Owhyee Mountains also provides income to the area, though during the 1990ís many changes in the industry began to take place.
