History & History Related Items

McMinnville history: The founder of McMinnville was a pioneer from McMinnville, Tennessee. His name was William T. Newby. He arrived in Oregon in 1853, on the first wagon train. By 1866, McMinnville was being described as the "most flourishing village in the county." It had 300 inhabitants and had five stores, three blacksmith shops, two wagon shops, a photographic artist, a silversmith, a shoe shop, two doctors, and a flour mill.

Residents of McMinnville incorporated McMinnville to be a town in 1876. Then in 1882, they again incorporated, this time as a city. In 1886, after major campaigns by McMinnville citizens, they voted to change the county seat from Lafayette to McMinnville. The county seat still remains in McMinnville.

McMinnville continues to expand but manages to keep its history alive. The city takes pride in maintaining a friendly community atmosphere. . . That is life - "McMinnville Style." (Submitted by Lisa Timm, High Desert Middle School. Information from the McMinnville Info. System Department)
The incorporation date of McMinnville: 1876 (town), 1882 (city)
