"The first post office in Mitchell was authorized by the Post Office Department at the request of William Johnson in 1873, with Johnson as the first postmaster. That he was a man of more than average strength and physical stature is attested by' his nickname, "Brawdie." He was a blacksmith by trade, and must have resembled, somewhat, the chief character in Longfellow's well-known poem. Mr. Johnson requested that the office be named Mitchell in honor of then Senator from Oregon, John Mitchell."
