Here is a history page for Newport.

Newport is named for Newport, Rhode Island, but it is not certain who is responsible for the name. Samuel Case, the first postmaster when the post office was opened 2 July 1868, was from the Newport, Rhode Island area. He opened the Ocean House resort named after a famous hotel in his hometown. Newport became the county seat for Lincoln County in 1952.
