Here is a history page for Sherwood.
The Tualatin Indians were the first inhabitants of the area. By 1853, farmers had moved into the Sherwood area. J.C. Smock gave the railroad a right-of-way through his property in 1885 Just a few years later, in 1889, he and his wife, Mary Ellen Hall, planned the new town of Smockville which built up around the railroad tracks. When the city incorporated in 1892, the residents felt they needed a name which was more "sophisticated." A local business owner, Robert Alexander, suggested the name of Sherwood because of the forest in the surrounding area reminded him of Sherwood Forest in England.
