Summerville, with a population of abut 145, was originally a settlement along the Umatilla Indian Trail and later a stage stop forearly travelers coming into the Grande Ronde Valley from Walla Walla by way of the Tollgate pass. This is a scenic rural area where deer and wildlife thrive.
The community was named for an Alexander Summerville, an early valley resident. It lies at an elevation of 2,705 feet towardthe north west end of the Grande Ronde Valley. Students in the area are served by the Imbler School District.
