The six professional truckers were selected by an independent agency from a field of 29 Goodyear State Highway Heroes for 1995. There were 57 drivers in this year's original group of nominees (TT, 12-11-95, p. 26).
Two of the four finalist positions are being shared by drivers who worked together to help rescue accident victims. The finalists are: Vincent Carr, Pleasant Valley, N.Y., and Shawn Dyke, Umatilla, Ore., who jumped into the path of an onrushing freight train to pull an unconscious driver from a pickup truck. The incident took place in the desert near Gallup, N.M., in September. Mr. Dyke, who drives for North American Van Lines, watched as the pickup'sdriver passed out from an apparent seizure just as the vehicle pulled alongside Mr. Dyke's truck. The pickup hit the truck, careened across the median strip, crossed another road and eventually came to rest on a railroad track in the path of a freight train. Mr. Dyke stopped after being hit, ran to the tracks and tried to pull the driver from the pickup.
Mr. Carr, a driver for J.B. Hunt Transport Services, was behind Mr. Dyke's truck. He joined Mr. Dyke at the railroad tracks and together they freed the unconscious man from the pickup. When the train slammed into the truck, they were just five paces from the collision, reports said.
The six drivers and their guests will join Goodyear for a weekend of automobile racing activities and honors ceremonies at the Daytona 500 stock car race Feb. 18 at Daytona Beach, Fla. The drivers will be guests of Walt Disney World as grand marshals of a parade in the Magic Kingdom. They also will take flights aboard the Goodyear blimp.
