A story is told by Robert Murray, whose grandfather settled in the valley east of Unity in 1861, that the first post office in the area was at Tucker Swamp on Jobg Creek on the freight road to Baker City, about one and one half miles from its present site. The settlers and the ranchers that were throughout the valley had a meeting to decide where to move it, as they felt that the present location was not convenient. They all came into agreement on the location and were so pleased with their agreement that they decided to call it "Unity." So Unity post office was established in 1891.
