History & History Related Items Waldport history: This community is said to have received its name in the early 1880s at the suggestion of P. V. Wustrow, then postmaster at Alsea. It came from wald, German for forest, and the English word port, describing that the bay was surrounded by forest, which it once was. Waldport was established by David Ruble, and the post office was established June 17, 1881. This office was on the north side of Alsea Bay. The name was changed back to Collins on Feb. 23, 1882, having been named that until the establishment of the post office. On August 15, 1882, another Waldport post office was established with Thomas Russell postmaster. He was succeeded by David Ruble on Sept. 27, 1883, who had been a postmaster in the earlier Waldport.
