"Linking regional coal mines to the New York area, the Delaware & Hudson Canal Company played a prominent role in the development of the Lackawanna Valley and in the naming of its towns. Archbald was named in 1846 for James Archbald, a senior mechanical engineer on the D&H. Prior to this, Archbald was known as White Oak Run"
