Carbondale, pa. is the fourth oldest city in the state. it is older then Scranton or Wilkes-Barre.
In the early 1800s, Carbondale was the remote site of several unsuccessful mining attempts. By 1820, however, Hudson officials took a new interest in the abandoned shafts and directed workers, as an obscure memo is rumored to attest, to carry tools and supplies to the "dale (valley) where carbon was found."
