1775, January
Oldest existing volunteer fire company
Most people do not know that Darby has the oldest still existing volunteer fire company in the United States. It is Darby Fire Company # 1. It was organized in January of 1775, which will make this fire Company 225 years old in January, 2000. That is also older than the first fire department (Philadelphia Fire Department ) as they are now a paid department. We have been doing this continuously, as volunteers, for 225 years, and were ready for the next millennium and beyond!
