History & History-related items
"In 1885, Forest City was little more than a lumber camp called Pentecost, named for its founder William Pentecost. The lumbermen often went into thriving Carbondale for supplies by day and diversion by night.
Apparently a group from the lumber camp walked into Carbondale one day, and someone remarked, in effect, "Where on earth are you from?" They looked at each other, then one of the bright ones spoke up, "We're from 'Forest' city." The name stuck, and in 1888 the town officially took on this name.
