World War II Men & Women from Kulpmont!
This little town, nestled in the eastern portion of Northumberland County in the Anthracite coal fields, had a population of 5,240 in the 1940 census. During the period September 3, 1939 to September 2, 1945, 1,030 men and women served in the Armed Forces of
the United States. That is almost 20% (19.65) of the population. That must be a record for any town of comparable size.
Two men died in the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
Thirty-nine men made the supreme sacrifice and one woman, an army nurse, in an accident on the island of Hawaii.
